Himself accessible. God renounces every form of power. He welcomes human weakness into Himself, and saves the world by the strength of His love. With God, we believe that love is the only path to life.

We keep our eyes fixed on the Infant Jesus, who gives direction to our daily life and guides our choices. Just as the cave of Bethlehem welcomed Shepherds and Magi, so our communities, inserted among poor and marginalized people, desire to be a place of encounter where men and women of different backgrounds can meet and converse with one another.

Looking with kindness

Bethlehem…it seems to me that’s how we look at our neighbor, the world, creation, and even ourselves—with God’s own kindness. Such a pure and whole way of looking is still found in little children. We adults must go through the kind of conversion Jesus speaks about, in order to find it anew in Him. I must turn away from my pessimistic, hard-nosed way of looking at things, thinking I always know best, and turn to unreserved trust in God, “who visits and redeems His people” (as the song of Zechariah reminds us.) I must be converted to a way of looking at each human being—at the world and all creation—that sees that they are good, in spite of the evil which is trying to prove the contrary. Fortunately, we are not alone. In the moments when we succeed in looking at the world with this attitude of kindness, we can be grateful and encouraged by the number of people in the church and in society who, believing in God or not, yet are striving to become truly human. Indeed, they often risk much in their commitment to justice, truth, respect for human dignity, social responsibility, etc.
